‘What we do to the soil, we do to ourselves’

Loam depicts a breakdown of our soils chemical make-up through the process of chromatography. Soil samples were taken from 3 dominant types of land that make up our landscape in the UK; Grazing pasture, arable farmland and ancient forest. These samples were then chemically digested, soaked into silk and exposed to sunlight to reveal a readable depiction of our soils composition.

Loam invites you to study and compare the intricacies and differences between the soil that supports our industries and the soil we have left relatively untouched. Soil chromatography is a powerful and accessible DIY tool for assessing soil health and our future food security depends on the health of the dirt beneath our feet.
